I'm working at my district office for the summer (the same low-income district I teach in during the school year). I administer a simple test to incoming kinders who are ELLs (English Language Learners). I point to pictures and ask questions like: "What is this called?" or "What is this used for?" and the child responds (or doesn't, depending on the kid). In one of the questions I point to a doctor and ask, "How does she help people?" to which one particular 5 year old responded last Friday, "taking out the bullets from people." :(
